He graduated from Henderson County High School in 1972.Richard served his country in the US Army with the 173rd Airbourne Brigade. He completed one tour in Vietnam where he served as a paratrooper. Upon leaving the military, he worked as a Horse Groomer at Ellis Park in Evansville, IN, and Keeneland in Lexington, KY. He was very passionate about his profession.
Richard found joy in the simple things in life, especially being out on the golf course and spending time with the family he loved so dearly. Golf was one of his passions, but taking care of his family was his greatest calling. He had a heart that would do anything for the people he loved, especially his children and grandchildren. His love was shown not just through his words, but through his actions, his sacrifices, and the way he always made sure we were taken care of. Though he may no longer be here with us, the love he gave, the memories we shared, and the lessons he taught us will live on forever.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Levander and Hattie Barnes; his brothers, Herman Barnes, William Barnes, Eugene Barnes, and Donald Barnes, and one sister, Linda Baker.
He is survived by his daughter, Cecily King (Henderson, KY); his grandson, Julius Thomas (Louisville, KY), and his granddaughter, Jemiah King, (Henderson, KY). He also has one surviving sister, Deborah Turner (Henderson, KY), and a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Brenda Cooke, his long-time best friend of over 20 years, for the care and compassion she showed him in his final days. Brenda, thank you from the bottom of my heart for the love, kindness, and compassionate care you showed my daddy during his final days on earth. Knowing he was in such caring hands means more to me than words can express. We will forever be grateful for the comfort and dignity you gave him during such a difficult time. May God bless you for the beautiful heart you have and the difference you make in the lives of others. Your sacrifice does not go unnoticed.

His love for his family will forever be a part of us, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Though we must say goodbye for now, the love he gave us will never fade. He will forever be our Daddy, our protector, and a piece of our hearts that can never be replaced.
