Born on February 25, 1949, Richard graduated from New Harmony High School in 1967. Following graduation, he proudly answered the call to serve his country in the United States Air Force, receiving his honorable discharge in 1972. Richard went on to build a dedicated, 35-year career at GE/Sabic before retiring to focus on what mattered most to him: spending precious time with the love of his life, Patty. A man of faith and community, Richard was a devoted member of First Southern Baptist Church. He was also deeply committed to supporting fellow veterans as an active member of The American Legion Funkhouser Post #8, where he honorably served as both Commander and Vice Commander.
In his free time, Richard was an avid golfer, loved tending to his vibrant garden and yard and he was always embarking on a new project around the house. He loved spending time at the American Legion with his many treasured friends.
Richard was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Dorothy and John Maurer, and his father and stepmother, Marion and Frances Schutz.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, carried on by his beloved wife of 34 years, Patty Schutz. He is also survived by his daughters, Sandy (Doug) Hartman and Shaun (Kirk) Bunner; his sons, Brian (Amanda) Schutz and John M. (Amy) Haller; his 14 cherished grandchildren; his sisters, Anne Burns and Christine Johnson; his brothers, Randy Schutz, John Schutz, Stan Maurer, and
David Maurer; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Leslie Brown and all of the nurses at the Ascension Cancer Center for their compassionate care and support.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 31, 2026 at Alexander North Chapel, officiated by Pastor David Cullison; with burial to follow in Alexander Memorial Park. Friends and family may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2026 and from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Richard's honor to the First Southern Baptist Church or The American Legion Funkhouser Post #8.
