As a teenager, Richard caddied at Helfrich Golf Course. He was a 1946 graduate of Reitz High School. He began work at Bucyrus-Erie at the age of 16, and retired after 38 years of service. He also drove a school bus for EVSC for 12 years before retiring. He served in WWII with the Merchant Marines and belonged to the Evansville Scottish Rite, Hadi Shrine Temple, and Masonic Lodge #64. He was also a member of St. Paul’s Evangelic Church. On March 3, 1947, he married Ruth Geppner. Richard enjoyed gardening, especially growing strawberries. In his later years, he grew vegetables in his backyard and was proud of his tomato plants. He shared his yield with family and friends. After retirement, he enjoyed playing golf.
