Robert “Bob” William Koehl, 66, of Evansville, passed away Monday, February 29, 2016, at home surrounded by his family. He was born January 13, 1950, in Indianapolis, to Alene (Haak) and the late William Koehl.
He graduated from Harrison High School in 1968. He was a standout track star and was winner of the city championship in the 100 and 220 yard dash as well as numerous other track and field accomplishments. His performance on the track earned him offers from prestigious schools such as Florida State and many others. He decided to stay closer to home and begin his college education on a full athletic scholarship at Southern Illinois University. Shortly after he transferred to University of Evansville, where he continued running track and earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1972 and Master of Arts in 1976.
Bob was a dedicated teacher in the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation for 37 years. The majority of his career was spent at Scott, Bosse, North, and Highland. He continued his passion for athletics as the track coach for several years at Bosse and then later as the equipment manager for the athletic department at North. He made a great impression on many of his students, especially during his time as a driver education instructor at North. His children still, to this day, get many comments from people in the community that had Bob as an instructor.
In his free time, Bob enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially time out on the water fishing. Bob was an avid fisherman and his favorite species to target was largemouth bass, a passion that was passed down from his father. Bob was a 40 year member of Ken-Bar Bass Club of Lake Barkley and was the longest continuously active member in club history. He was Ken-Bar angler of the year in 1994 and 1997. Bob won numerous tournaments, both large and small, over the years. One of his greatest joys over the last few years was when his children, now adults, would join him for the occasional tournament. In retirement, Bob spent most of the summer months with his RV at Goose Hollow Campground at Lake Barkley. He also purchased a home in Okeechobee, FL so friends and family could join him for fishing in the winter months.
Bob was preceded in death by his father, William Koehl; and brother, Jack Koehl.
He is survived by his son, Christopher Koehl and his wife, Ursula; daughter, Abbigail Koehl; mother, Alene Koehl, all of Evansville; sister, Christine Hutchison and her husband, Tom, of Melbourne, FL; nieces, Katie, Erin, and Anne; and cousins, Terri Williams, Mary Mobley, and Lynne Morris, all of Evansville.
Celebration of Life Services will be 7:00 PM Thursday, March 10, 2016, at Alexanders East Chapel, officiated by Rev. Philip Hoy. Friends may visit Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
