

He attended Baker Elementary School and graduated from Central High School in 1936. He played clarinet in the school band. Robert enjoyed Dade Park and Churchill Downs and attended many Kentucky Derby’s. At 10 years of age, he was a passenger in a small Blimp and a WWI British fighter plane. He served in WWII in the Army Medical Corp for 44 months and was overseas one year in Munich, Germany. Robert retired from the family owned, Saveway Market and later worked 3 ½ years at Hyden-Steiber Hardware. At the age of 69, he went to work for Schnucks on 1st Avenue. He finally retired at the age of 82. Robert was a member and Deacon at Washington Avenue Presbyterian Church; member of Lessing Masonic Lodge #464 for over 65 years; and VFW Post 1114 for over 60 years.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Geraldine Humphrey; four brothers, Edward, Milton, James, Paul Humphrey; and sister, Bess Ulsas.
Robert is survived by his wife of 31 years, Jessie (Hall) Humphrey; sons, Donald Humphrey (Janice), Steven Humphrey, Coram, NY; daughter, Barbara Jordan (Rick); grandchildren, Robert P. Humphrey (Mindy), Christopher M. Humphrey (Leslie), Sherry Benedetto (Victor), Robert Humphrey, Catherine Humphrey, Beth Humphrey, Jennifer Elfreich (Zach), Jacob Jordan (Josie), Jessica Jordan; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1:00PM, Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at Alexander West Chapel with burial and military rites at Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit, Tuesday, June 5, 2012, from 4:00PM until 8:00PM and Wednesday from noon until service time at the funeral home.
