Sarah Jean “Sally” Cabage, 94, of Lawrenceville, GA, formerly of Evansville, IN, passed away Saturday, December 22, 2018. She would want us to remember the good times that we had together and not to be sad. We are here to celebrate her life.
Sally was born on March 29, 1924, in Cannelton, IN to George Wilber and Mabel (Adams) Aldridge. She graduated from Cannelton High School in 1942. From an articles in the Cannelton and Evansville newspapers: The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) asked the Cannelton High School teaching staff to select their "Best Citizen".
The qualifications to consider when selecting were: 1 Dependability, truthfulness, loyalty and punctuality. 2 Cooperation, courtesy and consideration of others. 3 Leadership, ability to assume responsibility. 4 Patriotism toward: Family, school, community and nation. Sarah was chosen and competed against the winners from Tell City & Troy High Schools. She was selected over the other candidates by a DAR panel and sent to Indianapolis, IN to represent Perry County.
The same Cannelton newspaper article also stated that while attending Cannelton High School she was the Feature Editor for the school newspaper, Snapshot Editor for the yearbook, Chorus, Office Girl, Drama Club, Thespian, Checker Club and Freshman year Class President. In addition she also wrote several plays that were produced by the Cannelton High School Drama Club and was a member of the girls basketball team.
Sally assumed the duties of Perry County Deputy Treasurer from Jan 1944 - June 1946.
She met Norbert Schaefer in June of 1945, on the Excursion Boat Island Queen, which cruised between Troy, Tell City & Cannelton. Sally and Norb married on June 24, 1946 at St Michaels Catholic Church, Cannelton, Perry Co, IN. They honeymooned at Spring Mill State Park (Mitchell, IN). Afterwards they resided at the "married housing section" of Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, where Norb was enrolled in Pharmacy school. Norb passed away in 1975, after 29 happily married years.
Sally was a homemaker instilling her values into her children. She worked for the University of Evansville and in an Evansville physicians’ office for many years. Sally was an avid reader and through her books she traveled around the world. The Aldridge’s (George, Bill and Bob) were athletes and this included Sally. She won many bowling tournaments and a Evansville city golf tournament. She was a Pink Lady at St. Mary’s Hospital and a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
Sally and Chet Cabage married in 1979, in Las Vegas, NV, and over their 18 wonderful years together, they traveled the world.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Norbert A. Schaefer (1975); second husband, Chester G. Cabage (1995); brothers, Joseph Aldridge (1941), Robert Aldridge (1990), William Aldridge (1991): parents George (1949) and Mabel Aldridge (1984).
Sally is survived by son, Joseph Schaefer (Catherine); daughter, Kathryn Woo (David); grandchildren, Lisa Donovan (Andrew), Angela Casados (Daniel), Brian Woo; Amanda Simpson (David), Kristina Stewart (Robert); nieces Patti Aldridge (Mike), Lisa Bennett, Sara Aldridge, Gina Aldridge (Tina), Cindy Scheidegger (Charlie), Becky Sturgeon (Don) and Lori Cassidy (Brian); nephews, Chris Aldridge (Lisa), Bill Aldridge (Karen) and Joe Aldridge (Lisa);
Private services will be held. Father Bernie Etienne will officiate the Mass at Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the burial at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Evansville, IN. Reception and bowling follows.
