Obituary of Sascha D. Hupmann
Sascha D. Hupmann, 49, of Evansville, passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2020 after a courageous battle with Ataxia. He was born in Munich, Germany on April 21, 1970 to Leo and Christine (Bellstedt) Hupmann-Hartl. He attended Northview High School in Grand Rapids, MI as an exchange student his senior year. Sascha participated in varsity basketball and helped his team win the conference championship in 1989. Following graduation, Sascha attended the University of Evansville where he played for the Purple Aces. Sascha helped lead the Aces to back-to-back MCC Conference Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in ‘92 and ‘93. Both years, he was named to the “All-MCC Conference Team” and was named “CBS Player of the Game” for both NCAA Tournament appearances. He was always a fan favorite and loved hearing the chants of “Hoop! Hoop! Hoop!” rocking Roberts Stadium. After graduating from UE with a bachelor’s degree in Criminology, Sascha played professional basketball for 11 years in Europe where he led 3 teams to 5 National Championships, participated in the World Championships (‘94), the European Championships (‘97), and was selected for several All-Star games. He played in both Germany and Greece for Trier, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, ALBA Berlin, Panathinaikos Athens and Iraklis Thessaloniki. He was also selected for the German National Team (‘94 -’97, ‘01). Another opportunity afforded to Sascha through basketball was the chance to play on one of the teams in the 1993 movie Blue Chips. Following his basketball career in Europe, Sascha chose to return to Evansville. The love and support he felt from the community during his time at UE was calling him “home”. Upon his return, Sascha earned a master’s degree in counseling and worked as an elementary school counselor. Spending time with his son, Noah, and watching him play soccer, tennis, and basketball brought him great joy. Sascha is survived by his wife, Brooke Hupmann of Evansville, IN; son, Noah Hupmann of Union, Kentucky; mother Christine Hupmann-Hartl of Munich, Germany; father, Leo Hupmann of Munich, Germany; grandmother, Hilde Bellstedt of Munich, Germany; step-sons, Austin Fuchs of Greenwood, IN and Noah Fuchs of Evansville, IN; parents-in-law, Ray and JoNell Turpin of Fishers, IN; half-sister, Vanessa Brackland of Munich, Germany; step-sister, Marion Klein (Christian) of Munich, Germany; sister-in-law, Dina Reverman (Brad) of Indianapolis, IN; and many nieces and nephews.
