

Sylvia graduated valedictorian of the Calhoun High School class of 1944. After high school, she moved to Evansville and contributed to the war effort working at Briggs Manufacturing. She enrolled at Lockyear Business College where she was certified as a comptometer operator. Using this training she worked at Swift & Co.
She married Donald R. Gross on December 26, 1948. After the birth of her first child in 1951, she devoted her energy and time to her family. She took great pleasure and satisfaction in preparing delicious meals for her family and extended family gatherings.
Sylvia was a long time member of Salem Church of Darmstadt where she was active with the Women's Guild, Bible studies, and Sunday school. In her later years, Sylvia participated in the Seniors Group.
She was an active member of the Scattered Neighbors home economics club for many years, a Red Cross volunteer, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Sylvia was honored to receive the Kentucky Colonel Award.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Donald Gross; her brother Charles Whobrey and her sisters Ruth Southard and Trilby Ball; six half-brothers, Howard Miller, Preston Miller, Hobart Whobrey, Everett Whobrey, James Whobrey, and Woodson Whobrey; and half-sister Hallie Whobrey.
Sylvia is survived by sons; John Gross (Donna) and Kirby Gross; daughter, Sara Rombola (Greg); grandchildren, Lauren Piekos (Chris), Lisa Gross, Diana Rombola, Michael Rombola (Le), and Melissa Rombola; great grandchild, Elliott Piekos; cousin, Marilyn McCall, and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at Salem Church of Darmstadt, officiated by Rev. David Peterson. Friends and family may visit from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
Sylvia's family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff at North River Health Campus and AseraCare Hospice Care for their compassionate care and support.
