After graduation from Reitz High School, he entered the Army Air Corps, attaining the rank of Staff Sgt. On April 27, 1942, he married Cleo Holstead, of Bossier City, LA, in St. Louis. They had three sons, Randy of Albany, OR; Roger of Springdale, AR; and Rod of Fishers, IN. Tom was a lifelong member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, was a member of the Evansville Scottish Rite and No Ruz Grotto. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed his family, friends, neighbors, and "country home'. Tom worked at Seeger, Whirlpool, Hahn, Inc., and Hammer Industries, where he was co-owner with his brother Ralph Hammer, of Evansville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cleo, his parents, brothers, Orval, of Los Angeles' and Ralph, of Evansville, and sister, Joan Tutsie, of Knox, IN.
He is survived by his three sons, his sister, Dolores Sanders of Evansville, seven grandchildren, one great grandson, Thomas S. (Tommy) Hammer, of Farmington, AR., and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, at Alexander West Chapel with pastors Lynn Marino and Jeff Long officiating. There will be Masonic Rites performed at 9 a.m. and visitation will be available from 9:30 until 11:00.
