He graduated in 1944 from Clay High School in Clay, KY.

Thomas was a member of Mason Lodge, Jachin #729 Clay, KY, since 1947; Scottish Rite, Evansville, IN, 1950; Hadi Shriners, Evansville,IN, 1951; member Hadi Drum & Bugle Corp, 1952, served as President, 1957; President Hadi Uniformed Bodies, 1974; Major Hadi Uniformed Units, 1983; Served as Chief Aide for Potentates Burt Cloud and Wayne Buttram; Riverbend Assocation, 1986; Owls Club, 2001; attended Westwood General Baptist Church.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Bettye Gordon; parents, Richard and Marie Mitchell; sister, Sue Hill; brother, Billy Mitchell in WWII.

Thomas is survived by sons, Dr. Randy Mitchell (Rhonda), of Terre Haute, IN; Rick Mitchell, of Newburgh, IN; daughter, Ruth Ann Whipkey (Stan), of Evansville; granddaughter, Elizabeth Whipkey, of Orlando, FL; grandson, Evan Whipkey, of Evansville; sister-in-laws, Evadean Gordon, of Evansville, Marcia Thompson (Ben), of St. Louis, MO; brother-in-law, Tinker Hill of TX; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 11:00 AM Friday, April 22, 2011 at Alexander West Chapel, officiated by Bob Hammond, with entombment at Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit from 2:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday, April 21, at the funeral home. Hadi Drum & Bugle Corp and Hadi Shrine will walk through 6:45 PM Thursday with Masonic service at 7:00 PM.
