Todd William Mazzier, 47, affectionately known as “Sarge” to his closest friends (and there were many!) passed away peacefully in his home on July 1, 2020. Todd was born on October 31, 1972, in Evansville, IN. to William J. and Sandra Anne (Hayden) Mazzier.
Simply put, Todd was an incredible man, full of life and had friends spanning the country. He was as fiercely loyal as he was protective to all those he loved. He was smart, headstrong, athletic, competitive, generous, and always “gotcha” with that captivating, sly little grin. Believing he was “Superman”, at the age of 2, and with the encouragement of his 5-year-old sister, he set off to conquer flying by jumping fearlessly off his highchair, only to land unceremoniously on the kitchen floor and receive 8 stitches under his chin. This would just be the 1st of many escapades Todd would find himself in throughout the years, he didn’t give up easily. Todd loved to win and usually did!
Todd’s competitive and athletic skills came quite naturally, playing basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis and even hockey in elementary school. Advancing in soccer was his passion throughout his career at Reitz Memorial High School, where he was proud to be an integral part of three IHSAA Boys Soccer State Championship Teams. He went on to attend DePauw University where he played soccer for two years and graduated from the University of Southern Indiana where he finished his soccer career as a Division 1 player.
Todd was co-owner of T&S Financial Services, a company he and his partner, Sam Garau, founded in 2012. He formerly worked at the Stryker Corporation selling capital equipment to hospital accounts for more than 10 years.
After college, Todd never sat idle, he continued playing sports, soccer, golf, and until 4 years ago, he played on several softball teams, including the USSSA Indiana travel team which competed around the country and won a World Championship. He enjoyed being a member of Oak Meadow Country Club and was very involved with fitness. He avidly worked out at Tri State Athletic Club for most of his life.
Todd had a great number of close friends, but mostly Todd was a proud family man. He loved hanging out with family and friends by the pool, sharing stories and throwing back a cold one or 3! Todd was always the first to protect and support those in need. He was a faithful Christian and loved being involved in his children’s lives. He adored his 3 children and was an enthusiastic dad, always ready for a game of catch or a piggy-back ride. Equally, his children and nieces adored him and held him in the highest regard. Todd dedicated most of his free time to coaching his children in baseball, basketball and soccer. He was well respected as a coach, loved by his team and their parents alike. Todd had a true passion for making a difference in a young athlete’s life, both on & off the field. A true leader, he will be greatly missed by his family, friends and players.
Sadly, Todd’s life was cut short by a devastating illness, ALS. He valiantly and bravely approached this as always, he played to win. Unfortunately, ALS is the fiercest disease of all, and one that cannot, yet, be outrun. Nearly 3 years after his diagnosis Todd learned to fly after all.
Todd is survived by his children, Reece Nicole Mazzier, Jacob Angelo Mazzier, and Ryan Isabella Mazzier; their mother, Rachel (Buchta) Mazzier; parents, Bill and Sandy Mazzier; sister, Kelly Mazzier-Devitt (Tony Panepinto); brother, Andrew Mazzier (Megan Yeryar); nieces, Hayden Devitt, Jamison “Delaney” Devitt, and Taylor Devitt; aunt, Judi Thompson (Tommy); and uncle, Tom Hayden (Kathy) and several cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 7, 2020, at St. Benedict Cathedral officiated by Fr. Joseph Ziliak. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, July 6, 2020, at Alexander Funeral Home – East Chapel and Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m at the church. Entombment will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests any donations be made, in Todd’s name, to The MazzierStrong Foundation (a 501c3 organization to fund ALS research and care).
