She loved rummage sales, cooking (always from scratch!), and redecorating her home. She was very caring and compassionate and loved being with her family. She worked at Bernardin during WWII after it had been retooled to aid in the war effort. Nanny loved to feed the “hobos” that jumped off the trains back in the 40’s and would invite them in to her home for a big meal. She was a devout Christian that never said an unkind word about anyone.
Nanny was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Harold B. Givens; and son, William Givens; she was the last of her family.
She is survived by her daughters, Renee Givens and Shirley (Terry) Poag; son, Jack Givens; grandchildren, Jamie (Nick) Sallee, Kristina (Kent) Simms, Brent (Laura) Poag, Leslie (Jason) Spindler, William Givens, Jack Givens, Jr., and Gregory Givens; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at Alexander East Chapel, officiated by Pastor David Whitmore, with entombment in Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may visit Monday from 2:00 to 7:00 PM and Tuesday from 9:00 AM until service time at the funeral home.
The family would like to thank Dr. Inzerello and the nurses at Deaconess Hospice for their compassion and loving care.
Memorial contributions may be made to Deaconess Hospice. Condolences may be made online at www.AlexanderEastChapel.com.
