After graduating from Bosse High School in 1950, Bill earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Evansville College in 1954 and a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University in 1958. For 31 years he taught music in Posey County and Oakland City public schools, directing bands, orchestras, and choirs. From 1966 through 1973, he taught at University of Evansville and conducted wind ensembles. For 27 years Bill played clarinet in the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, 14 years as principal clarinetist; he continued serving his love of music as a Board member of Friends of UE Music. He served as concertmaster of Evansville Symphonic Band for many years and found joy in giving private lessons to students of all ages.
Throughout the 55 years Bill belonged to Trinity United Methodist Church, he served in many capacities; as lay leader, and, as chairman and member of many committees. In addition, he sang in the Chancel Choir and participated in the Wesley Advocates class. Bill was a charter member of Ohio Valley Woodworkers’ Guild and a longtime member of Evansville Westside Kiwanis. In retirement he build fine furniture and turned beautiful objects of art.
Bill is survived by his wife of 68 years, Charlotte; daughter, Lynn Cain (Robert) of Columbus, Indiana; sons, Stephen M. (Ellen) of Boonville, Indiana, and Mark (Mary Jo) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Nathan Cain (Billy Hilton), Brian Cain (Leslie), Dr. David Knapp, Dr. Joshua Knapp, Robert Knapp, and, Katherine Knapp; nephew, Bryan J. Williams; cousin, David Stephens.
The family will hold visitation on Monday, 29 August, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., and on Tuesday, August 30 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 216 S. E. Third Street, Evansville. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the church.
The family is grateful for the compassion of medical staff, caregivers, friends, and family over the past months.
