Tom reveled in words. An avid reader since childhood, he majored in English Composition at DePauw University, where he also became editor of the school newspaper. Tom’s novella The Creation won a prestigious student writing competition and was published by the university. Tom’s razor-sharp wit delighted all within earshot. He had the soul of a poet.
Tom spent his life in compassion for and service to others. Tom worked as a respiratory therapist in Emergency Departments in the Chicago area for many years, saving untold lives. Years later, he worked as a security guard at the Evansville Zoo, a true animal-lover and protector gone pro. Tom volunteered as a Boy Scout leader, after-school tutor for children, and Hospitality host at Patchwork Central. Even in times when he himself was experiencing homelessness, Tom taught literacy classes for residents of the shelters where he was staying.
Tom loved playing bridge, listening to both the Grateful Dead and NPR, and reciting poetry by A. A. Milne.
Tom unexpectedly found love later in life with his dear partner, Shawn Craddock. The two of them had many wonderful adventures together.
Tom is predeceased by his parents, William Charles North and Arlene Boss North; his sister, Lynne Elvin; and his brothers, David North and Preston Yarber.
Tom is survived by his step-mother, Joyce North; his sisters, Mindy Curless, Lisa Clouthier, and Karen Sylvis; his brothers, Chris North and Gregg North; his loving partner and caregiver, Shawn Craddock; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
There will be a Service of Celebration of Life for Tom on Sunday, June 11, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Patchwork Central, 100 Washington Ave., Evansville, IN 47713.
