November 10th, 1917 - January 13th, 2011
Agnes, Babe, as she was affectionately known as, was born in November 10th, 1917 in Dodge City, Kansas to Mary and Eugene Carman, the third of eight children. The family lived in Kansas until 1929 when they moved to Washington State.
Babe was educated in parochial schools in Kansas and Washington until high school where she attended and graduated from Everett High School with the Class of 1935½.
She met Elmer, Bud, Burghduff in 1931 and, after a long courtship, they were married on July 3rd, 1936. They lived and worked in Everett most of their married life, with a couple of exceptions being a short stint in Burien, Washington, due to Bud's job at the time, and at Chiwawa River Pines in eastern Washington, after his early retirement, living next to Sister Winnie and Brother-in-law, Arkey. Bud's passing came in 1981 and Babe stayed in Everett until she moved to Marysville in 1991. She then moved back to Everett to Sunrise View Assisted Living Home in late 2009. She spent her final days in the Sunrise View Convalescent Center.
Babe and Bud both worked to raise and support their four and a half sons during this time, Jerry, Tom, Jim, Jack and Don. Bud spent most of his working life around Everett as an auto mechanic and Babe worked in retail sales at the Sears Roebuck department store in downtown Everett for a few years, then as a waitress, first working with Sister Winnie at her cafe on Highway 99, Mollie's Cafe, Bobbie's Cafe and the Bungalow Cafe, all located on Hewitt Avenue in downtown Everett. She also worked as a house-sitter for a few years, alongside Sister Rose Marie.
Babe was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Winnie Duren and Francie Fossum, and her two brothers, Edwin and Bill. She had also lost three of her sons, Tom in 1994, Jim in 1996 and Jerry in 2004 plus three great-grandchildren and a niece, Pat Barnett. She is survived by her remaining one and a half sons Jack, with wife Susan, and Don, with wife Carol, thirteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three of her sisters, Mary Risen, Rose Marie Clark and Shirley Moses, along with many near and dear friends.
A special thanks to the ladies from St. Mary's Church in Marysville and St. Mary Magdalen Church in south Everett, for their many visits and prayers and the Nurses and staff at Sunrise View for their kindness and attentiveness. Also thanks to George and Donna Gamble, Babe's next door neighbors in Marysville, who watched over her and helped her out whenever needed.
And lastly, an extra special and heartfelt thanks from the family to the three nieces\cousins, Pat Barnett, Mary Grinnage and Phyllis Heike. And also to Don and Carol for all the love, time and assistance they gave to Auntie Babe\mom. Without them, we could not have made it through these past few years as we have. We love you all!
