Don was my Great Uncle, his sister Lilas was my maternal Grandmother, her daughter Cynthia was my Mom. I remember going to visit Don and Peggy when I was little , sadly most of the family lost touch. I found out he passed because I recently started researching my where I came from. In 1993 our family held a family reunion in Arlington Wa., it was there that I met Don and his lovely wife for the first time.  My grandfather is Bert Honeycutt and my mother is Alta (daughter of Bert and Winnie Honeycutt). It is unfortunate that I never knew the entire family, however, Alice Jones has shared with me many wonderful stories from years past. I spoke to Don a few years back on the phone, that was the last contact I had with him.  He was a great man, my condolenses are with the family.

As you all know, Dad has been very unwell for over 6 months. That he lasted so long is amazing. Having lived to 90 years old is no small accomplishment in it's self. 

During his life, he frequently defied the rules of what is expected at any age. At 40 years old he decided he wanted to go racing, so he built a race car in our driveway and went on to fill the mantle with trophies. Needing to retire early, due to a stroke, he went on to learn many different skills, such as painting landscapes, restoring antique cars and making yard mobiles out of wood. He kept busy well into his 80s.

During his life, he was a sailor, a mechanic, a welder, a construction foreman, a businessman, a race car driver, an artist, a carpenter, a husband, a father, a grandfather and a great grandfather. He was a very good amateur chess player. He had a really fine touch with a pool cue. At different times in his life he played both trumpet and banjo.

While he became a bit of a grouch in his later years, he never raised a hand or even his voice to me, throughout my childhood. He didn't have to. Just a look of disappointment in his eyes was punishment enough. Dad was my role model of what a man could be.

Don was my first cousin. His father and my Mother were brother and sister.
The Honeycutts used to have the best times together. Most of them great musicians. My father was always the piano player. Our house was a favorite place as my Mother was such a good cook.
Don was always so special. He made the entire family proud when he joined the Navy. He was so hansom in in uniform.
I have lost touch with Don since my Christmas card was returned last year as not deliverable.
Since his passing, there are only 2 of the first cousins left now.
He will be missed terribly. My heart goes out to each member of his family for such a great loss. Wish I could be at his memorial, but the problem with aging is you just can't do everything you want to do---like traveling.

I worked with Don in the late 70's and he was a great Mentor and a lot of fun to be with. He was always willing to share his talents with fellow employee's. I imagine him in Heaven running a race with his Model T Roadster.  Our Loss and Heavens Gain.

Sorry, but I will not be able to attend Don's Celebration of Life at Trinity Lutheran Church on Friday, Oct. 19th, 2012. One of the results of getting older is that I don't drive the Tacoma to Lynnwood highway anymore.  I was so happy to see it being held at Trinity Lutheran Church.  May it be a happy though sad time for Don's family and a reminder that God is always there for us.   Birdell Wangsmo, Tacoma, WA

What is the definition of an Uncle? hmm Someone who steps in when your own Dad is out to sea. He makes you laugh when you tell a joke that no one else gets. He loves you unconditionally just like his Father did, and he loves you with his whole heart. 
He and Aunt Peggy took you to Trinity Lutheran Church when you were a very little girl and taught you to know and Love the Lord.
I thank God for loaning me this precious human being for as long as he did...and it makes me smile knowing he's home with his whole family, his loving wife and his Brother (my Dad) and I'm sure they're doing something they shouldn't be doing. Those two could get into more trouble lol...but we all loved Uncle Don just the way he was.
