Matthew Laird Myers, age 44, of Everett, Washington, passed away on July 17, 2013. Matt was born to Bonnie and George Myers in Everett July 2, 1969. He was the father of three boys, and a 21-year veteran of the Everett Police Department. Matt graduated from Mariner HS in 1987, and obtained his BA in Law and Justice from Central Washington University in 1991. Matt worked as an intern for Everett PD while in college, and was hired as a police officer on September 20, 1992. He was vice president of his academy class and after training worked night shift patrol until realizing his long term goal of becoming a narcotics detective. Matt worked for EPD narcotics investigations from 1997 to 2000 and for the Snohomish County Regional Narcotics Task Force after that. In 2001 Matt became a homicide/persons crimes detective. Matt was promoted to Police Sergeant on April 3, 2005. He supervised north Everett patrol crews and later the Special Investigations Unit. Matt served with great pride on the Everett Police Honor Guard for many years. He was also a member of the regional major incident team (SMART) and coordinated the Regional Intelligence Group (RIG). He loved serving the community he was raised in and being a police officer. He had numerous commendations over his career and was respected by his peers. In addition to his passion for police work, Matt was a great storyteller, regaling his friends and family with tales of daring, oddity and humor both on and off the job. He was a big fan of watersports and RV camping with his family, played the video game Halo with his boys for hours at a time; he was known to play a lousy but entertaining round of golf. Matt enjoyed cooking and was a master of the BBQ. He will long be remembered for his antics with his best pals Michael Michele and David Killian at the Wahoo Ranch while a college student. Matt took great joy in being a father and in recent years had the pleasure of becoming a grandfather. Matt was preceded in death by his father, George. He is survived by his mother, Bonnie Myers; his sons Barton (Libby), Stephen, Matthew and their mother, Shirley; brothers George Myers, Chris (Jill) Myers, Phil (Delia) Myers; his grandchildren Charlotte, McKinnley-Rae, and niece Anna. He leaves his close companion, Gina. He also leaves many aunts, uncles and cousins on the East Coast. Matt was a natural helper, born to serve others and knew an amazing number of people from his days as a fun-loving high school kid through his many years as a police officer. Despite his health struggles in the last few years, Matt was a man of intelligence, charm and mirth, whose love, sense of service and dedication to his family, community and fellow officers was immense. Anyone who met Matt walked away a friend. He will be missed by many. A Celebration of Matt's life will be held Tuesday, July 30, 2013 4:00 pm at New Life Church, 6830 Highland Drive, Everett, WA 98203. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Matt’s honor to the Everett Police Memorial Foundation, PO Box 1253, Everett, WA 98206.
