Celebrating A Life That Meant So Much

The honorable Frank Gale Akin, Jr. was the oldest son born on July 29, 1931 to the union of Frank and Harriet Akin in Helena, Arkansas. The family moved to Chicago when he was 5 years old. He attended Betsy Ross Elementary School and Englewood High School where he was on the football team.

After graduation, he joined the United States Air Force. He trained at Sampson Air Force Base (AFB) in New York. After basic training, he was assigned to Camp Gordon, Georgia for Military Police training. Later, he was assigned to Stewart AFB as a Military Policeman. He was then assigned to Langley Field, Virginia as a Military Policeman. He was later sent to Albrook Air Force Base in Panama at the Canal Zone. He was assigned there until he was Honorably Discharged in 1955.

He was employed at Ford Motor Company. After about two years, he started working at the United States Post Office as a Window Clerk and later a Dispatcher.

He worked at the Post Office for 30 years until he retired in 1987. After retiring from the Post Office, he worked part time for Avis car rental.

He met Miljan Shoffner in 1957. They dated for two years and decided to get married on February 28, 1959 at St Columbanus Catholic Church. He was married to the love of his life Miljan for 61 years. Frank was a devout Catholic and was a member of St Dorothy Catholic Church for many years.

Frank was on the “Honor Flight Chicago” to Washington, DC on September 7th, 2016 honoring war veterans.

He was an easy going, selfless man who always put his family first. He was a man of God and an outstanding role model to all who knew him. In his past time, he loved to watch sports. From nail biting basketball games, action packed football games, and baseball, he loved them all. He also enjoyed watching Western movies.

Frank will always be remembered as a great and sincere man that loved those around him.

Preceding him in death were his parents Frank and Harriet; his younger brother Charles; and his nephew Little Charles.

He leaves to cherish his fond memories, his loving wife, Miljan; son David; daughter Gina; and a special son/close family friend Ronald Hardy and a host of other family and friends and his church family. After reading obit and knowing Gina, who is a sweet and considerate person, I’m sure that Mr. Akin and his wife were great parents. My dear Sister Gina, my heart goes out to you and your family in the passing of your father. I know full well of the special bond you had with your dad, and I know that death cannot break it. God will make it possible for you to keep him alive in your heart and keep your spirits connected. I know He will. You are my “sister from another mother”, and God brought us together. God Bless You, and keep you. Draw your strength from Him. Love Ya
