Franklin Blackshire Owens, Sr. was born on December 29, 1932 to the union of The Reverend Lindsey and Carrie Ray Owens. “Frank” was the sixth of eleven siblings. The family moved from Argo, Illinois to the Englewood neighborhood in Chicago where Frank graduated from Copernicus Elementary School and Englewood High School.
After high school, Frank began working as a laborer at Corn Products Refining Company. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War and received an honorable discharge in 1955. Upon returning home from the service, Frank worked for an airline food service company before joining the Yellow Cab Company first as a driver then transitioning to a dispatcher position. He worked at Yellow Cab for over 32 years until his retirement in 1995.
Frank accepted Christ at an early age. He joined Greater St. John A.M.E. Church in 1950 and remained an active member for over 45 years. At St. John, Frank was a member of the Senior Choir and remained faithful until his health declined.
Frank departed this life at home peacefully in his wife’s arms on April 25, 2020. In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his siblings: Marguarite Lucas-Davis, Clarence Lucas, Lindsey Owens, Jr., Miriam Gant, Livingston Owens, Fredrick Owens, Reverend Elaine Owens-Walker, Alecla Kent, Gloria Creamer, and Carol Rosario; and one grandson, Jeffrey Owens.
Frank leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 45 years, Gilda; one son, Frank, Jr. (Jackie); three daughters, Jeanella (Joseph) Kerber, Lynette Owens, and Stephany Owens-Jordan (Leon); one stepson, Sean Green; ten granddaughters; four grandsons; twelve great-granddaughters; twelve great-grandsons; one great-great-grandson; five sisters-in-law, Sr. Brenda Eagan, Grace (Edwin) Gentle, Barbara Eagan, Rose Owens, and Barbara Owens; one brother-in-law, Michael Eagan; many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and a faithful partner in crime, Sully, “his” dog.
