James Lyle Brainard, age 77, of Fairborn died on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Patriot Ridge Community. He was born the son of Lloyd & Mary (Benson) Brainard on February 6, 1937 in Postville, Iowa. James graduated from Janesville High School in Wisconsin and Park University. He served his country with the United States Air Force as a navigator/bombardier in B47’s, as a C-130 navigator stateside and in Vietnam, and as an air traffic controller at Wright Patterson AFB, retiring in the rank of Captain in 1979. His military awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross, 14 Air Medals and numerous other awards and decorations. He retired from civil service in 1999. He was a member of St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church and the Distinguished Flying Cross Society. He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Rosemary Ebert and Judy Hill, and one brother, Gerald Brainard. James is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Judith, daughters, Susan Brainard of Bellbrook, Ohio and Elizabeth Barnhouse of Dublin, Ohio, one son, Thomas Brainard of Columbus, Ohio, grandchildren Abby, Andrew, Alexander, Michael and Daniel, two brothers, Roger and Leroy Brainard. A memorial service will be held at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 1501 N. Broad St., Fairborn at noon, May 3, 2014. A visitation will be held one hour prior to services at 11:00AM to noon at the church. Inurnment to be determined by the family at a later date.
