

Mrs. Shirley served with her husband during his 40-year career in the Air Force. She worked in the federal government around the world. Her career allowed her to work at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (AFB), Ohio; Seoul, South Korea; Hickam AFB, Hawaii; Scott AFB, Illinois. She was also a long-term employee at Presbyterian Homes in Louisville, Kentucky.
Carolyn was an avid University of Kentucky basketball fan, as well as a Boston Red Sox baseball fan. She loved going to the games in person for both of her teams, but cheered just as loud when in her living room. She dearly loved her family and enjoyed going to the casino with them and playing the slots in a way only she could do.
She is preceded in death by her father, Archie Louis DeVita, of Hamden, Connecticut; her mother, Marie Virginia DeVita (Negretti); and her brother, Richard L. DeVita, of Cheshire, Connecticut.
Carolyn is survived by her husband of 61 years, Michael D. Shirley Jr.; daughter, Renee M. Haas (Randy); son, Michael D. Shirley (Krista); grandchildren, Brandon Shirley (Kayleigh), Daniel Shirley (Sophia), Rachel Shirley, Jonathan Shirley, Kyle Haas, Miranda Haas; great-grandson, Thomas Shirley; step grandsons, Cory Haas, Jerin Haas; step great-granddaughters, Jaiden Haas, and Alaina Haas. She will be missed and loved by all the rest of her brother and sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2023 from 5-7pm at Fairdale McDaniel Funeral Home, 411 Fairdale Road, Fairdale, KY. Service will be on Friday, March 24, 2023 at 11am, with visitation starting at 10am. Burial to follow at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central at 1:30pm.
