Cindy Andes Nance passed peacefully from earthly life on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021. Daughter of the late Rev. Mark Andes and Kathy Cooper Andes, she was raised as a “P.K.” and found that not a burden but a joy. Her Christian faith and church families, both United Church of Christ and United Methodist, were central to her life. Also central was the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she met her future husband, formed lifelong friendships, enthusiastically cheered the sports teams, and prepared for a career in nursing. Cindy was a dyed-in-the-Carolina-blue-wool Tarheel.
Cindy’s nursing abilities first evidenced when aiding the family cat through the troubled birth of a litter of kittens. She loved being a nurse, initially in labor and delivery and then moving into the infertility field. She cherished helping couples begin their families and treasured her colleagues and work of 26 years at Genetics and IVF Institute.
Cindy avidly enjoyed decorating for holidays, especially Christmas. She loved traveling, particularly to the mountains of North Carolina and the islands of Hawaii, of which Maui was her favorite.
Cindy also deeply loved her family. She is survived by husband Richard Nance, mother Kathy Andes, son Scott Nance and fiancée Jane Case, and son Patrick Nance. Cindy’s death shortchanged her from getting to meet in person Patrick’s girlfriend Zoe Baek. Survivors also include sister Kristin Andes and husband Tom Magraw, nephew Joe and niece Hannah Magraw; sister-in-law Carol Lewallen and husband Robbie, niece Isley and husband Mike Ivey and their daughter Ellie; brother-in-law John Nance and wife Donna, nephew Jacob and wife Ciara; and a supportive circle of cousins.
A service celebrating Cindy’s life will be held at Herndon United Methodist Church, 701 Bennett St., Herndon, VA on Thursday, Sept. 30 at 2 pm, with visitation with the family beginning at 1 pm. Masks are required. Please observe social distancing.
An additional visitation is planned for Saturday, Oct. 2 from 1-4 pm at Vogler Funeral and Cremations at Forsyth Memorial Park, 3815 Yadkinville Rd., Winston Salem, NC.
A gentle person, Cindy was fiercely determined to live after being diagnosed with cancer at age 50.
She endured much over 14 years before her body was finally overwhelmed by metastatic disease. We are grateful for resourceful oncologist Dr. Anthony Felice, the full medical team who cared for Cindy through the years, and the nurses at the Inova Schar Cancer Institute - Fair Oaks who, after years of chemo care, came to feel like friends.
Cindy lived with integrity, compassion, and love. If you would honor her life in a material way, consider a donation to support the Inova Schar Cancer Institute.
