Hi Wendy - Kim let me know the sad news. My heart goes out to all of you and especially your Mom. No matter how expected, nothing really can prepare you for the finality of this loss. Please let her know we are thinking of ,and grieving with her. The road ahead will be tough without Dave by her side, but I hope she finds some comfort in the support of her family and friends, both near and far. If I can help in any way please let me know. I am sure it will be a confusing time these next few days, but know we are always here. With tears and lots of love to you all, Ted ❤️

Sweet Gramps. I’ll dearly miss your loving hugs and the cologne you wore. I know that smell will always wake me back to you. You always rooted for me and called anyone a bastard who was against me. I miss you deeply and will love you forever. Rest easy in a Hawaiian paradise. <3

Dear Anna, Wendy, Rachael and family.

We loved Dave!  He was a kind, thoughtful and generous man with a sharp wit.  He was much more than a brother-in-law, more like a real brother.  When Dave was around we always felt like there was going to be an adventure. And there were.  So many memories flash before our eyes right now.  He will live on in our hearts and minds forever.  Take care of yourselves, and may he rest in peace.

Dear Ann,
 
I know this is a difficult day for you and your family as well as a host of other friends to say goodbye to a wonderful, fun man--he cast such a long shadow.
 
From the first day I meant Dave he was thoughtful, kind and always ensured that I was an integral part of the Commissioner’s group, which he lauded over with many jokes and comments (some were off color just to get everyone’s attention but always without malice).  I remember like it was yesterday that after Billy Weiss’s passing (they were inseparable and rode together always during our golf outings) although I could never replace Billy, Dave invited me to ride with him and from that point forward we seldom ever didn’t occupy the same golf cart.  So many stories can be told about his humor and quick wit, many of which I use today (granted I do not always give credit to Dave for borrowing his creativity) but they still cause a laugh.  And his love for animals was without match.
 
You meet a significant number of people during life’s journey but few touch or influence your joy in the way Dave did mine and I suspect others.  I’ll keep his memory alive and hold in my heart the kind man I knew as a true friend.

I write this to you, Gramps, and am so very sorry for not being able to celebrate your life in person. 

 	I will remember you for your character and heart. You are a true testament to the idea that you can create a beautiful life through determination and looking out for others. You have a style all your own, a refined preference for classic Rolls-Royces, and an ear for good music like Frank Sinatra, whose songs seem to always accompany your presence.    

 	You appear tough, Gramps, but you have a heart of Aloha and care more than you let on. I believe that your life's work is taking care of those you love, which I mentioned on many occasions to Linda - and you do this with humility and quiet strength. You also have a one-of-a-kind sense of humor - subtle and perfectly timed; something I always looked forward to in family discussions.  

 	I’ll always remember that evening at your home in Dallas when I asked to marry Linda. Your joke to Tutu that you both were "finally getting rid of her" showed me your unique way of welcoming me into the family. That blessing not only gave me my second family but someone I am so very proud to call Gramps. 

 	Thank you, Gramps, for your blessing and the family you have given me. Thank you for the music of Frank Sinatra, the care you have for others, and humor that is all your own. 

  	I love you and will always remember the style of Aloha that is uniquely yours. I miss you.

Still remember all the Dallas fun through the years. When times were tough, I always knew Gramps was always waiting at the doorstep to welcome us into his home. Memories could’ve never been made if it weren’t for his fun snarky comments 🤍 I love you!

Goodbye old friend. I will see you later. I will bring the scotch. Thanks for the jokes, there were always funny, even the fifth time you told them.

Dave was the sweetest, most caring grandpa I could’ve ever asked for. I still remember him teaching me how to drive in his thunderbird and fully trusting me to keep it in one piece (even if he really shouldn’t have). I’ll always remember how much fun we had on those trips and the funny conversations we had along the way. I love and miss you Gramps

Dear Anne and family,
We were so saddened to hear of Dave's passing. He will be terribly missed by anyone who knew him. Anne, you  and Dave were the best neighbors. We loved meeting up with him every morning when we walked the dogs. He always had a twinkle in his eye, a smile, and probably a joke or two to share. He was a sweet, kind and dear man. We send our love and prayers to his beloved family. Terri and James Smith

It was a little disconcerting growing up when you have the same name as your cousin: David Lewis. But, the family made it easier. He was "Big David" and I was "Little David". And that worked out just fine. Of course, Big David lived far away and I'd only see him on his occasional trips to Detroit... but I was in awe of him! Tall, handsome, funny... and we had the same name! I was so proud to be Little David-- Big David's little cousin! As the years passed, I was able to send my Mom & Dad to visit their nephew a few times in Hawaii. It meant so much to all involved. I was rewarded when I moved to Los Angeles for work... and Dave called me at the studio. "My team didn't make it..." he lamented about his beloved Oakland Raiders... "Your Chicago Bears did. I've got four tickets to the Super Bowl in New Orleans. You want 'em?" D'uhh! It was the best of times!!! In fact, he came-up with tickets to the NEXT Super Bowl, too... In L.A.! When last we met, at a "Lewis Cousins Reunion" in upstate New York a few years ago, I finally met Dave's son, Dave, Junior. We sat their comparing notes as the three "David Lewis's" in the family. They both went by "Dave". I was always "David". We made a pact and changed our names to "Dave #1", "David #2", and "Dave #3"! And that's what we called each other. Sadly, we lost #3 a few months ago. And now #1.  I'll stick with being called "#2"... but I'm just as happy remaining "Little David".  Say HELLO to the family, #1!

I never had a conversation with my cousin "Big David" (a.k.a. "Dave", a.k.a. "Flop")... where he didn't quote my Dad, his "Uncle Solly". Usually it involved jokes they shared or famous "Uncle Solly-isms". Dave's favorite was when my Dad would feed the birds in the yard. He'd toss out seed and bread and yell, "Jewish birds first!"  Once, when Flop complained to his Uncle that he couldn't get good deli in Honolulu... my Dad sent him a huge box of kosher hot dogs, salami, corned beef, and all the rest. "I was thrilled to receive such a gift," my big cousin confided in me... "But he forgot to pack it with dry ice! By the time it got here, you could smell it three blocks away!" I received a surprise phone call from Dave just a few weeks ago. Again, he laughed as he repeated those stories and added a few extras. He really loved and missed his Uncle Solly. Almost as much as I will miss hearing those stories once again.

After his stint in the Navy, Dave soon settled in Hawaii... where he built successful careers... first in automobile sales... and then in real estate. Perhaps his next "uniform" was a suit and tie... or, more than likely,  shorts and a Hawaiian shirt!

The familiar smirk! Dave wore a couple uniforms along the way. This was probably his first.

Dave got the nickname, "Flop"... as a play on his middle name, "Phillip". Like all of the "Davids" in the family, (and probably Donna, too!)... he was named after his paternal Grandfather, David Bernard Lewis (1883-1929).  Later in life, like on his Facebook pages... Dave used the middle initial "S"... as an homage to his beloved "Uncle Solly" (Sol Lewis)... his Dad's youngest brother.

Please accept my condolences to the entire family. I was so very sorry to hear of Dave's passing. May your family find peace in all of the memories you shared with him.  Fondly, Lynn Pines
