I quietly mention my Brother-In-Law's name every Sunday, along with the name of his brother, Peter.

Eladio is always with us. Always. We will never forget him.  

Happy birthday Kuya ELY! I was so looking forward to my trip to Fairfax to celebrate your 79th birthday. But God had other plans. Instead today we are celebrating your earthly life. I will miss your easy laughter and your generous soul!

I will also miss our conversations about our ancestors which you knew so well. You are our family historian. You were big in celebrating our family reunions, Amador or Villasin.

You stayed true to our roots in Atimonan. And as if God had designed that due to Covid 19 you had to stay in Atimonan the last full year of your life, spending a lot of time in Lakip where we all begun. You were my hero when you saved me from drowning in a swift current in the Lakip River when I was about 8 or 9.

You were always in your quest for a better life, not afraid of the challenge that awaited you. You worked hard and sacrificed the chance to be with your family on a daily basis to provide for them  and did it with courage and dignity, whether it’s Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Saudi Arabia, Australia, California or North Carolina.

Adventure was not your motivation. It was the opportunity to earn a good living for your children’s future. All your sacrifices paid off Kuya Ely and I congratulate you for a job well done!

Paalam for now. You will be forever in our hearts.  May you Rest In Peace!

It is with deep sorrow and sadness that I write this tribute to our Uncle Ely.  He was  a loving, caring and selfless man.  Thank you for being a good brother to  Dad, Tito Peter and Tita Tessie.  I will always remember your great sense of humor and infectious laughter when I was growing up.  Even though you have passed on, I would like to think that you are still here with us.  Love and prayers from your nephew/sadiq.

Thank you for your friendship and healing when I came back from the war.
With your company and conversations—You bailed me out of what others describe as PTSD without even knowing it. You’re not known for your gentle words, but your compassionate ears has proven otherwise.

Thank you for your tough love when it mattered the most. It gave me strength and candor. 

Thank you for showing me the path to the American Dream—-To never blame others, your color, or creed for any struggles you might experience, but to keep on striving and believing in yourself.

Thank you for teaching me humility, from our part-time job bagging groceries (together) in East LA, I vividly remember your words on our daily mile walk to our tiny apartment at Bleeker Ave —-“Through hard work nothing is impossible to accomplish in this country.” Your stern belief in US democracy have inspired me to serve. I still carry that to this day. For that I’m forever thankful.

Thank you for showing me the importance of family. To never forget where you came from. 
As a young man, you have been through a lot; growing up from the small province of Quezon, Philippines; traveling to places like Saudi Arabia, Australia, and finally settling in the US— you have scoured the globe to provide support for your family. Central to the story of your survival in your adult years is your love for your parents and your siblings. You would do anything for your brothers (Nanding, Peter) and sister (Tessie). You have told me you wish you could have been more of a better brother to them; you are and more. 

Thank you, Tatay, for being a very good father. You are so selfless. You (and Mom) would have sacrificed your life to ensure that me and my sisters have a fair share of a decent life. 

So be it, until we meet again—-your values will be forever lived. Your memories will be forever shared, and your love will be forever missed.

A few days before his trip to the US he visited us in our new home. He was not talking and just listened to Nanding reminiscing about their childhood in Atimonan.
He was excited to go back for his vaccination and treatment and to celebrate his birthday with Ryan and family.  He was also expecting Tessie to celebrate with him and visit him in Virginia to visit the White House. 
He requested Nanding to get him tennis balls so he can roll his feet with them as advised by his daughter in law, Carlette. 
It was a wonderful albeit short visit.   The months that you were here enabled you and Nanding to get to talk to each other more often.  Ely you will be missed.  We will miss your thoughtfulness in making sure that your brother would get his supply of the best fishes as your father had taught you and for the pinangat and buding. 

Tiyo Eladio, we are grateful for the thoughtfulness you’ve shared with our family. I will never forget all the memories we’ve shared. You’ve always been so generous that whenever you come and visit us in Brgy. Lakip, you would come bearing gifts. Tatay Tivo and Nanay Bella will for sure miss cooking your favourite “ginataang manok”. We will also miss our never-ending kwentuhan and tawanan. Tiyo, I am thankful for all the help and advice you’ve given me, it will never be forgotten.

You are always loved and will always be remembered. Prayers for peace and comfort in the days ahead.

Tiyo Eladio is my godfather and has become our second father as he was always in our home before he went abroad. But even though he was away, he never forgets to visit us and brought us pasalubong every time he was on vacation. I still remember the time that you were calling me to drive you to "sabungan". I was so happy doing that for you as I never get the chance to do it for  tatay. I won't forget all the life lessons you have taught and shared in the past. I will always remember your jolly personality . I am forever grateful that God has blessed us with a loving Tiyo like you. May you rest in peace  and please send our regards to tatay delfin nanay tilde kuya emman and ate thelma... We love you..... 

Tito Ely, you will be greatly missed. I cherish the memories of you watching over us your nieces and nephews when we were growing up during your breaks. I will always remember your ready, infectious laugh. And how good you are at teasing!   Am so happy that I got to see you and talk you one last time.  Your loving niece, Ickay 

Tatay, Thank you for the love and support you gave us. The time you spend with Rose and the kids (Sophie, Sidney and Savanna) these past few months of the pandemic  were priceless moments  and a true gift for them, especially to Rose.  You gave her more time and precious moments with you.  The long talks with her during our visits gave her comfort, peace and an opportunity to give back love from a daughter to the father. With that, we are truly blessed.  I’m going to missed the pork belly you ordered for us at Richmond and the take outs of fried chicken at McDonald’s or Jollibee.

I met him one Summer a few years ago when I was trying to lose weight and walked the same 2.5 mile path every day.  I crossed this older gentleman who smiled at me and waved ever single day.  By the middle of the Summer we began to chat and I looked forward to seeing my "walking buddy" each day.  At the end of the Summer he told me he was leaving to go back to the Philippines for the Winter but promised to reconnect when he came back the following year.  The following Spring I met a young couple with a cute dog that looked similar to mine, Max and because good friends with them.  Then one day, Tay Tay showed up on our walking route and was walking Max.  I was stunned to discover he was actually the Father of my new friend, Ryan.  He always teased that he was my friend before Ryan and Carlette.  I will sincerely miss him on my daily walks.  He was a good man with a great sense of humor.  I know that he is watching over us all now, and for that, I am thankful.

I miss you everyday Tatay. I will cherish all the moments we had and remember them all so vividly. 
Thank you for bringing me and raising me. Your guidance and values I will carry on forever. Until we meet again. I love you po. 



I can't forget how happy he was when I finally found his favorite shoes online. Adidas Stan Smith was on sale and at the exact price he was aiming for. He wanted to go back to his daily walks at the farm. I am sure he earned some miles using those shoes. 

I will see you in heaven, tatay. 



Ely was one of a kind. He was humerous, generous  and always willing to help others. I first met him in the Philippines, while visiting my wife Teresa's home town. He walked up to me smiling with his hand out in a welcoming gesture. Never forgot the gesture.

Years later Teresa needed Ely to notorize a document, which included his input.  But he was working in Saudi Arabia. She had no idea that he lived hours from a notary. He walked two hours, no car, and got the documant completed. I was astounded by his sacrifice. Loved him even more with such  a display of duty to his sister.

God can't anything more from a loving husband who was so devoted to his children. 

Gonna miss my kababyang.
