Florence H Schweida Urban

Florence Helen Urban, 89, passed away on September 9, 2014 after a short illness. Florence was born to the late Adolf Schweida and Clara Kamensky in Egg Harbor, NJ on February 4, 1925. She was the youngest of four daughters. After her father died, Florence, at only 9 years old, moved with her family to Atlantic City, where she graduated from Holy Spirit High School. While working as a civilian for the Navy, she met and married LTJG Henry (Hank) Urban Jr USN in 1951. Their marriage flourished for over 60 years until his death in October 2011. They were blessed with 7 children: Bruce (Sheila), Karen, Gary (Jill), Allen (Barbara), Kevin (Carlota), Susan, (Giordi), Scott (DeeDee); and 21 grandchildren. Florence proudly took on the role of a Navy wife, raising “the kids” and supporting her husband’s naval career where he attained the rank of Captain. The Navy took them to over a dozen different locations including tours in Monterey, CA; St. Louis, Mo; Philadelphia, PA; Jacksonville, FL; Norfolk, VA; Key West, FL; Newport, RI; Barber’s Point, HI; Lemoore, CA; Montgomery, AL; and Washington, DC. They settled in Fairfax, VA in 1968, where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Florence was a devoted and active member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church for over 46 years. She was also a full-fledged member of the “Greatest Generation”, surviving the depression, working for the Navy through World War II, and raising her family through multiple deployments by Hank including three combat tours in Vietnam. She was the definition of a “strong woman” with a flawless moral compass and a compassion that influenced those around her. Family will receive friends at Everly Funeral Home, 10565 Main Street, Fairfax, VA from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 18, 2014. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Leo the Great, 3700 Old Lee Hwy, Fairfax, VA, at 11 a.m. on Friday September 19, 2014. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery on a later date.
