George J. Hughes peacefully passed away on August 25, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. George, son of the late Michael Hughes and Madeline Finnan Hughes, was born March 19, 1932, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
He was a graduate of Catholic University in Washington, D.C. where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts while playing basketball and being a member of the debate team.
He attended Georgetown University Law School where he obtained a Juris Doctorate. He practiced law in Washington, DC and Maryland for more than 60 years up until the day he passed. George loved practicing law and he was most at home in a courtroom. He was admired and respected by his clients and colleagues.
He was a spiritual man and a parishioner at Saint Raphael Roman Catholic Church for more than 55 years. He was a lector and active in the Saint Raphael Men’s Fellowship group since the group’s inception.
He was a member of the University Club and Congressional Country Club where he loved to play golf, dance and socialize with friends. He was a veracious reader and a loyal Redskins fan.
George lived life to the fullest and will forever be cherished in the hearts of his sweetheart and devoted wife of 65 years Sondra K Hughes and his daughters Lisa Hughes, Maria Hughes and Patricia Hughes.
Visitation is scheduled for September 3, 2026, from 5:00 PM-7:00 PM at Demaine Funeral Home Fairfax, VA.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 11:00 AM on September 4, 2026, at Saint Raphael Catholic Church Dunster Road, Rockville, MD.
A Private Burial will follow at a later date at Holy Cross Abbey in Berryville, VA.
