Helen “Moe” Coffee passed away on February 4th, 2026, after 94 extraordinary years. She was a beloved mother and grandmother who dedicated her life to her family. Born on November 6, 1931, in Lynchburg, VA, she enjoyed her childhood in the small city and forged a path forward that was not available to all women at that time as she later acquired her master’s degree in education. She worked as a teacher before meeting her beloved husband, Edwin F. Coffee, Jr., who was an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. After falling madly in love, Mrs. Coffee dedicated her life to Edwin and making a home as necessary to accommodate the rigors of military life. They had two children, Elizabeth Coffee Dawson and Robert Coffee. They made a home at every duty station where they lived, eventually returning to settle back close to home in Fairfax, Virginia. Mrs. Coffee lived with her husband in peace for numerous years in Fairfax before his passing. She continued to enjoy her life by volunteering as a docent at George Mason’s Gunston Hall Plantation for several years and enjoying time with her granddaughter. Mrs. Coffee took pleasure in the simple things such as time with her friends playing card games, time with her family, and time watching historical documentaries and classic westerns. She was an ardent Washington Nationals fan and rarely missed a televised game.
Mrs. Coffee is survived by her son, Robert Coffee, and her granddaughter Margaret “Maggie” Dawson. Her memory will live on in those who loved her.
Private funeral services will be held at the Old Post Chapel, Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Interment will immediately follow at Section 60 Grave 5329 alongside her previously deceased husband LTC Edwin F. Coffee, Jr.
