Born in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, on October 25, 1938, Iris moved to New York City at the age of 16 with her mother, beginning a journey marked by resilience, devotion, and unwavering love. On March 31, 1955, she married Juan Francisco Correa, and together they built a life rooted in family, faith, and purpose. They raised two children, Juan Francisco Correa Jr. and Soraya Maria Correa, and later relocated to Alexandria, Virginia, in 1969 to provide a quieter, safer home for their family. For 25 years, Iris worked in the hospitality industry, where she embraced a variety of roles, including management positions. Her dedication and work ethic were evident, but her heart remained firmly centered on her family - caring for them was her purpose, her mission, and her passion.
Iris was a woman of strength and grace. She was a devoted wife, a fiercely protective mother, and a loyal friend. Her passion was evident in every word she spoke and every glance she gave. She taught her children the values of integrity, compassion, and perseverance. Her home was a sanctuary of warmth, laughter, and unconditional love.
Even in the face of profound loss—first her son in 2016, then her husband in 2018—Iris carried herself with quiet dignity and courage. She remained a pillar of strength for her family, never allowing grief to dim her spirit. In her final years, she lived with her daughter and son-in-law in Clifton, Virginia, where she continued to be surrounded by love and care.
Iris is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Juan Francisco Correa; her son, Juan Francisco Correa Jr.; and her siblings, Gloria Lopez and Julio Luis Ribot. She is survived by her daughter, Soraya Maria Correa; son-in-law, Russell Thomas Oechsner; and a host of extended family members and dear friends who will cherish her memory.
Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched, the lessons she taught, and the love she gave so freely. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Iris loved fresh flowers. Those wishing to honor her are welcome to send or bring floral arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to her favorite charity: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
