
James C. Jewell, (Col, USA Ret.) 77, passed away on September 9, 2014, in Fairfax, VA. James was the beloved son of the late Ross and Catherine (nee Cope) Jewell. Born in Canada, he was raised in Michigan where he met his high school sweetheart, Ann Abigail Jenkins. They were married for 51 years until Ann’s death in 2011. Colonel Jewell was the loving father of Lori Sheerin and her husband Brendan, Bruce Jewell, and Doug Jewell and his wife Elizabeth. Cherished grandfather of: Mollie, Katie, and Sean Sheerin; Joey, Kelly, and Ben Jewell; David, John, Zach, and Bryan Jewell. Dear brother of Judy Carol Gibbs of Lansing, Michigan
Colonel Jewell graduated from Michigan State University where he was also a member of the Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity and played varsity ice hockey.
Immediately following his graduation in 1960, Colonel Jewell entered the United States Army as a second lieutenant, serving two tours in Vietnam, earning a Bronze Star with six oak leaf clusters, the Legion of Merit, and many other medals and commendations. Later he taught ROTC at Purdue University and served in Europe before retiring from the Pentagon in 1986 with the rank United States Army Colonel after over 26 years of service to his country.
Colonel Jewell was a long time resident of the Greenbriar community in Fairfax and served on the GCA board. He was also a Free Mason, member of the American Legion, and a charter member of the Host Vienna Lions club.
Family will receive friends Monday, September 15, 2014 at 4:00 PM at the Demaine Funeral Home, 10565 Main Street, Fairfax, VA 22030 with memorial services at 5:00 PM. The Committal Service for Col. and Mrs. James C. Jewell will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project.
