Joan was born in Arlington, Virginia to Carroll and Catherine Payne on November 8, 1936. She was a 1954 graduate from Fairfax High School. She married her lifelong love Dwight Lee Hubbard on June 28, 1958 in Vienna, Virginia. Joan began working for Fairfax County School Board at the age of 17. She continued to work for Fairfax County Schools for almost 40 years until she retired in 1992 to provide day care for her grandchildren. She proudly touched many children’s lives at her longstanding position as school secretary for Green Acres Elementary and she treated most as her own. Her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and broader community family were her true life’s work, resume, and passion.
Joan was also an active member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church where she worked with a faithful group to count the weekly offerings and rarely ever missed a Sunday mass. She also loved working in her yard, planting flowers, and feeding the birds, squirrels, and other wildlife. She was so full of life, happiness, hope, and love.
Joan is preceded in death by her parents, Carroll and Catherine Payne: Her sisters, Mary Catherine Hayes, Barbara Presley, and Norma Payne.
Joan is survived by her spouse, Dwight Lee Hubbard: Her children Michael Hubbard (Sharon), Catherine McBride (Timothy), Richard Hubbard (Karen), Timothy Hubbard (Elizabeth), 12 grandchildren, and 7 great-Grandchildren.
Joan was inspired by her faith and her family. Always thanking God for blessing her with such a rich family environment; never once taking credit for the outstanding example she set for those around her.
Funeral services will be held at Noon on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church with Father Jonathan Fioramonti officiating. Burial will follow at Fairfax City Cemetery. Arrangements are by Demaine Funeral Home.
