John Meade Griggs

June 22, 1952April 26, 2021

On April 26, 2021, John Meade Griggs, beloved husband and father, passed away suddenly at the age of 68.

John will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 44 years, Debbie; children: Paula, Justin, and Daniel; sisters, Ginny Vaden and Betty Vaden; brother-in-laws, Charles Vaden and David Vaden; daughter-in-law, Megan Duncan Griggs; as well as numerous relatives and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Meade Griggs.

John graduated from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) with an accounting degree. He was employed by the Federal Government for 40 years, with his final position being an Auditor for the Department of Defense Naval Audit Service.

A jack-of-all-trades, John could often be found working on numerous house projects or watching “How to” fix this or that YouTube videos on his iPad. He was full of smiles and greetings, always thinking of others and ready to lend a helping hand. John was a “family man” in the truest sense. He was especially devoted to his wife, Debbie, often stating, “My true joy is being with Debbie 24-7.” John was loved by all he met and will be remembered with great fondness and love for his kindness, compassion, and fun-loving nature.

A Celebration of John’s Life will be held on Sunday, May 2, 2021, at 3:00 p.m., at the Demaine Funeral Home - Fairfax, 10565 Main Street, Fairfax, Virginia 22030.

I was so heart broken when I got the news of John’s passing. I worked for/with him for many years at Naval Audit. I used to stop by his office just to chat and he would stop what he was doing so we could do just that. He was always so happy to share his wisdom and advice on many issues! As long as I knew John, I don’t remember ever seeing him upset or angry. I send my sincere condolences to his family.

Rest In Peace John, you will be greatly missed by all that knew you. 🙏🏻

Dearest Debbie and Family,

We were so saddened by the news of John's passing. He was by far one of the friendliest people we knew. Never did we see him without a huge smile on his face. We feel so blessed to have known him for all this years through the boys sports events. John would always be helping to support the teams anyway he was needed.

In the past couple of years, I enjoyed running into him on walks, seeing him bike ride, or even out shopping. Every time I saw him Debbie was by his side. I know that their love was unconditional.

Sending love and prayers to all. We will miss him dearly.

Dear Debbie, Paula, Justin and Daniel,
We are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers at this time. Auntie June, Rob, Sandy & kids join me in extending our deepest sympathy to you. We were so saddened to learn of John’s sudden passing last week.

As kids we remember the mealtimes at Grandmother&Granddaddy Griggs’s where John would compete with dad (Uncle Bill) when it came to country ham. John was always such a good sport and I can hear that deep laughter and see the sparkle he always had in his eyes as we also remember those big bear hugs.

May the memories you have be a source of comfort and peace in the days ahead. Sending our love and hugs to you all.

I traveled from NC to the Griggs’ home to attend high school prom with Justin many years ago. I will never forget how kind the Griggs family was, welcoming me, my mother, and my grandmother into their home that weekend — Mr. Griggs, especially. I am very sorry for your loss. Many thoughts and prayers for you all.

Debbie and Family,

My prayers are with you and your family during this time and the moments after. I pray that the peace and comfort of God be upon you all. May His peace surround you always.

John was ALWAYS a bright smile and an energetic hello greeting you in the halls of Naval Audit. When I was pregnant with my first child, John always made sure I had a breakfast donut :-). He always looked out for others and was willing to help in any way he could.
