June Louise Carter, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, educator and business manager, passed away on August 19, 2021 of respiratory complications at the age of 90. Mrs. Carter lived the last 41 years of her life as a resident of Springfield, Virginia, and her ashes will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery alongside her late husband, Robert "Doug” Carter, on March 17.
June was born to Louise and Charles Colwell on June 25, 1931 and grew up in Edwardsville and Dallas, Pennsylvania in a loving Welsh household with her sister Beryl, mother, grandfather, and great-grandmother. Her childhood was filled with happy memories of church suppers, piano lessons, scouts, climbing trees at camp, picnics, warm summer days at Harvey's Lake, and working to excel. She shared a large bedroom and most of her experiences with her sister and learned the value of education from her mother. She received a teaching degree from Misericordia University in Dallas (graduating summa cum laude) and commenced an amazing teaching career. To satisfy her curiosity of the world around her, June taught at elementary schools in Ohio, New Jersey, England, Virginia, and Germany.
While teaching in England in 1955, she met and became engaged to then Lt. Doug Carter, who was serving as an Air Force fighter pilot. They were married in Dallas in 1956 and set off into the nomadic life of an Air Force family, living in Austin, Clovis, Las Vegas, Colorado Springs, Montgomery, twice in Germany, Mountain Home, Ft. Meade and Springfield. June embraced this life of travel and transition, supporting her gregarious husband and raising her children Robert (Chip), Becky and William (Trip). She taught on and off during these years and later went back to school to earn a master’s degree in accounting, which she applied to a Business Manager position with St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School in Alexandria, Virginia.
Following the death of husband Doug in 2000, June led a quiet but active life in her home in Springfield, gathering with friends, hosting family visits, and spending much time with her daughter, Becky and granddaughter, Madi. She enjoyed family and loved her children, their spouses and grandchildren with her whole heart. She was very active in her church in Springfield and took on a number of volunteer jobs in the community. She enjoyed reading, puzzles, playing piano and getting together with friends in her late years.
June is survived by her sister, three children and grandchildren Evan, Maggie, Madi, Harrison, Nicole and Anissa. She is loved always for her kindness, compassion and spirit.
