Mary Madeline Wiseman Tankard passed away peacefully on May 11, 2021 after complications from congestive heart failure. She is now free of pain and dwelling with her Lord and Savior. Madeline was preceded in death by her husband, George G. Tankard, Jr. and her brother, Kenneth L. Wiseman. She is survived by her children Mary and Doug Pumputis, George III and Carol Tankard; grandchildren Sara Tankard and Daniel Grande, Janie and Michael Carnock, Amy and Adam Pumputis; sisters-in-law Estelle Tankard and Phyllis Wiseman; and many other family and friends who adored her.
Madeline was an amazingly strong woman as a mother, wife, and role model for all. Born in the Shenandoah Valley to Hallie and Wallace Wiseman in 1928 with a congenital hip issue that necessitated a 4-inch lift on one shoe, she pursued her goals with a passion to overcome any obstacle. She played tennis and basketball, and she was the first member of her family to graduate from college. She obtained a bachelor’s degree from Madison College (now James Madison University) in 1950. She taught high school business and social studies in Harrisonburg, VA, where she met her future husband, George. Together they raised two children, Mary and George, III.
Madeline was a talented craftsperson and even taught herself to build up her own shoes. She was skilled at sewing, quilting, knitting, and embroidering; her most recent projects were baby quilts, heirlooms for each of her four grandchildren to use for their kids. She was so excited that her first great grandchild would be born in September. He will be blessed to hear many stories and memories that will bring her alive for him. She rests in peace knowing that her legacy of love for family is passed on to the next generation.
In addition to her many church volunteer pursuits, Madeline was also a devoted Girl Scout member. She became involved when Mary became a Brownie in 1963, and went on to hold many roles, including troop leader, camp trainer, archivist, and recognition committee member. She received The Knox Award, the highest form of recognition conferred by the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital. Even though she grew up in the valley/mountains, she embraced George’s Eastern Shore life, and passed on her love of beachcombing and marine life to Mary and granddaughter, Amy. Madeline was also an avid sports fan and was so excited to see the Virginia Cavaliers win the 2019 NCAA basketball championship and the Washington Nationals win the 2019 World Series!
