Michael (Mike) Bernard Goldsteen, 83 years, passed away on September 15, 2021. He was born on July 8, 1938 in Washington, DC, the son of Frances (Gertler) and Charles Goldsteen. He was preceded in death by his brother Bob Goldsteen and first wife, Roberta Ann (Harris) Goldsteen. Mike is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carolyn Ann (Bennett), son David (Fairfax, VA), daughter Debbie Kyle (Alex), (Annandale, VA), and granddaughters Anna, Erin (Kyle), and Allyson (Goldsteen), and brother-in-law, Richard Bennett (Carole) (Denver, CO).
Mike grew up in northwest Washington, DC and attended Brightwood Elementary, Paul Jr. High and Calvin Coolidge High schools. He attended the University of Maryland, College Park and received a B.S. degree in accounting. After graduation, he spent several years working in accounting for the U.S. Government and private industry. Working closely with accounting systems, he developed an interest in information technology (IT) and while employed with IBM changed his focus to systems design and development. His first systems assignment was the design and installation of an accounting system for the Office of Economic Opportunity.
During his long IT career as a systems designer and program manager, he developed systems for IBM Federal Systems Division, JP Stevens and Co., Westinghouse Electric, Freddie Mac, Advanced Technology, and Electronic Data Systems (EDS). Mike retired from EDS in 1999 and returned to part-time employment as an accountant. He worked for ten years as the bookkeeper for the Adat Shalom Reconstructionist Congregation in Bethesda, MD.
Mike and Carolyn lived in Brookeville, MD for 48 years. During much of that time, Mike was active in the Lions Club of Olney, MD where he held several offices including Treasurer, Vice President, King Lion and Zone Chairman. Like all Lions, Mike was dedicated to helping others in his community and around the world live better lives through the efforts of Lionism.
Mike and Carolyn moved to Springfield, VA in 2019 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. A life-long conservative, Mike became involved in conservative politics helping to support local and national candidates and working at the polls. A great admirer of Thomas Jefferson, he left this world with the following Jefferson quote under his name on his last emails, “The man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but newspapers”.
If you would like to honor Mike, the family suggests a donation to the American Heart Association in his name.
The family will be receiving guests between the hours of 2:00pm and 6:00pm on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at Demaine Funeral Home, Fairfax. They would like to invite any guests that would like to share their fondest memories or stories of Mike at the time of 3:30pm
