Obituary of Michael Francis Sottile
Michael Francis Sottile passed away, peacefully at home, on August 1, 2020 at the age of 86. Mike was born in Brooklyn, New York, the third of eight children to Joseph and Mary Sottile. He was very athletic – drafted by the St. Louis Browns of Major League Baseball (now the Baltimore Orioles), but drafted into the U.S. Army at the same time. He also won several awards for the sport of table tennis. Mike met Bridget Lee upon her immigration to the U.S. from Ireland, while she was living & working in New York. They married and moved to California in 1959. Daughter Audrey was born in 1964, and three grandchildren followed: Nicolas, Francie and Ryan. Mike held several jobs during his working career, the longest being as the data operations manager for I. Magnin department store in San Francisco. He was a real extrovert, and later in life worked selling men's suits for Dillard’s, where he won several sales awards. He was also a vendor for Nabisco, and in retirement worked for Safeway as a courtesy clerk and greeter. Mike loved interacting with people; he enjoyed a good get-together, traveling, going out to eat, having a cup of coffee and a chat; and he tried to help others whenever he could. Services will be held Friday, August 14, 2020 at 10:30 am, at St. Luke Catholic Church, 7001 Georgetown Pike, McLean, VA 22101. Mass will be live-streamed, via https://youtu.be/y-uWSXN4hXk, with an in-person option as well (masks required, and please RSVP to Mike’s daughter Audrey). In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Mike’s honor to the Autism Research Institute, 4182 Adams Avenue, San Diego, CA 92116, or at Autism.org.
