In the evening of July 14, 2022, Nancy Ann Simpson died at the age of 85. Nancy was born to John and Mary Russel of Portland, Oregon on August 13, 1936. She spent her adolescence in Portland until she married her husband, Charles (Chuck) Betts Simpson, Jr. in the Fall of 1957. Nancy and Chuck traveled around the world, planting temporary roots as Chuck continued his service in the United States Army. Nancy spent the greater part of her life in Springfield, Virginia where she worked with Woodward Lothrop and the May Company styling DMV’s most fashionable women.
Nancy loved people and people loved Nancy. She had impeccable taste and never left the house without her pink lipstick. Gregarious and inquisitive, Nancy was an excellent conversationalist who prided herself on understanding everyone around her. She was an avid reader and spent many years visiting the Kings Park Library in her local neighborhood. When she wasn’t reading books and chatting up the neighborhood, she spent time in her garden feeding the birds and tending to flowers. She enjoyed watching football with her partner, Rick DeSalvo, and was a devoted Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Nancy and Rick enjoyed visiting camp together in Coudersport, Pennsylvania.
She is survived by her children, Charles B. Simpson, III of Hillsboro, Oregon, Laura A. Hart (Greg) of Culpeper, Virginia, and Catherine L. Nichols (Dave) of Culpeper, Virginia; and her three grandchildren, Kelly Hart, Shannon Nichols, and Trey Nichols.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lt Col. Charles Betts Simpson, Jr.; her daughter, Mary Caroline Simpson; and her brother, David Russell. Nancy will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She will be laid to rest next to her late husband, Charles Betts Simpson, Jr. during a private service at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
