

She was born in Salinas, California on February 28th, 1964, and grew up in Woodland near Sacramento, CA. She attended the University of California Santa Barbara where she graduated in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering and in Chemical Engineering. She then attended the University of Michigan and UC Davis for graduate school, earning a Masters and PhD in Nuclear Engineering from U of Mich. She worked for the Department of Energy as a contractor for 22 years, then a mathematics tutor at Northern Virginia Community College, and finally a child care worker. During her education, she worked many volunteer and part time jobs in health care and child care. Later, she balanced foster care with her marriage and career; her greatest joy came from caring for children.
She married Scott Roger Douglass in 1992, adopted her son Antonio Reed Douglass and gave birth to her daughter Samantha Hope Douglass in 1998. She was a strong, loving, compassionate, and steadfast woman, who loved God and lived for her family. She was a blessing to everyone she touched and will be long remembered for generations to come.
She was preceded in death by her father, Rafael Lopez, and her mother, Yolanda Lopez, and is survived by her husband, Scott; children Antonio and Samantha; brothers David Lopez and James Lopez Sr.; nieces Heather Lopez and Emily Lopez ; nephews Caleb Lopez, James Lopez Jr., and Daniel Lopez; and many close, dear friends.
Her loss is felt deeply throughout her community and she will be forever missed.
A memorial service will be held at Calvary Church, located at 8220 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, Virginia, 22003, on February 7, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.
A reception will follow at the same location from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.
