“Phil” was born to parents Zeke and Margaret Kannan, on March 10, 1932 in Wilson, NC. After graduating high school in 1950, Phil enlisted with the United States Airforce, and served as a radar technician during the Korean War. After completing his service obligation, Phil went on to attend NC State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in 1961. Upon graduation, Phil relocated to Washington, DC to take a job with the US Patent and Trademark Office, where he would serve as a Patent Examiner for the next 42 years. After retiring from the federal government, he continued to work part time for Chugach Information Technology until 2019, supporting the help desk for the Patent Office.
In 1966, Phil married the love of his life, Suzanne “Suzi” Marie Lang, who survives him. He is also survived by his son Christopher Kannan and wife Jaynee, son Jeffrey Kannan, son Patrick Kannan and wife Kelly, and daughter Katherine Hackett and husband Brant. He will be greatly missed by his seven grandchildren Cameron (CJ) Kannan, Sydney Kannan, Ashley Kannan, Olivia Kannan, Nicholas Kannan, Hailey Hackett and Tyler Hackett.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Zeke and Margaret, his daughter Karen Kannan, and his brother George Russell Kannan.
Phil was known for his love of sports. An active father who devoted most of his parenting years coaching his children’s sports teams or officiating youth basketball and baseball games. On any given day, Phil could be found sitting in his favorite red chair and watching his NC State Wolfpack, or any of the DC professional teams on TV. An avid golfer, Phil coordinated an annual golf excursion to Myrtle Beach, SC that began in 1978 and is still carried on by family and friends to this day. Phil especially enjoyed annual trips to Holden Beach, NC and Las Vegas, NV with his life-long friends, children and grandchildren.
As a caring father and grandfather, he will certainly be missed, and will always be remembered for sharing words of wisdom, entertaining one-liners, and the occasional twenty-dollar bill slipped into a grandchild’s pocket.
