Roberta was an influencer and connector before those words were established in the vernacular. She loved people and wanted everyone to be introduced. The daughter of Robert Doddridge Graham and Ruth McCandlish Graham Tallant, she inherited the social gene directly. She was born in Washington, D.C. on October 11, 1934. Her beloved Fairfax was home for the first 75 years of her life.
Roberta attended St. Agnes School in Alexandria, Virginia, Holton Arms Junior College in Washington, D.C., and George Washington University. She delighted her granddaughters with countless charming bedtime stories featuring her time at boarding school and university.
Friends introduced her to a quiet yet witty attorney on a blind date. He would become her husband of 51 years and they shared a love of family. She joins her late husband, Frank Mayer Carter, in death, and is survived by a son and daughter, son-in-law and daughter-in-law, 4 granddaughters, and 3 great-grandchildren.
Roberta was captivated by history, genealogy, and tradition. She derived great pleasure from her long time involvement with the Jamestown Society, the Colonial Dames, the Lee Society, the Fairfax Hunt, the Garden Club of Fairfax, and the Fairfax Debutante Ball. She was a dedicated member and served in numerous leadership roles.
After the death of her husband, Roberta enjoyed 5 wonderful years in Roanoke, Virginia living near her son and then 4 very happy years in Richmond, Virginia living near her daughter.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, October 14, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fairfax Cemetery.
