Stephen “Steve” Haas, 72, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2026. Born on June 1, 1953, he was the son of the late Herbert Joseph Haas and Frances Campbell-Haas. Steve was a devoted and loving father to Michael Wayne Haas (Nicole) and the late Eric Stephen Haas. He was a proud and adoring grandfather to Kai and Gianna, who brought immense joy to his life. He is also survived by his brother, Richard; his nephews, Ryan and Kevin; and was preceded in death by his brother, Edward.
Steve spent the last 22 years in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, but he always considered Fairfax, Virginia his true home. He dedicated much of his life to public service, serving as a Fairfax City Police Officer from 1977 to 1991. Following his time on the force, he continued to give back to his community as an instructor at the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy, helping to guide and mentor future generations of law enforcement professionals.
Known for his laid-back demeanor and kind spirit, Steve had a way of making everyone feel at ease and leaving them with a smile. He cherished time with his family above all else, especially his beloved grandchildren, Kai and Gianna. In his free time, he enjoyed listening to classic music, antiquing, and embracing all that life had to offer.
A gathering for friends and family will be held at Demaine Funeral Home in Fairfax, Virginia, at 10:00 AM on Friday, May 1, followed by a graveside service at noon at Fairfax Memorial Park. A celebration of life will follow from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at PJ Skidoos in Fairfax City. All are welcome to attend and honor Steve’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Steve’s memory to the Grand Strand Humane Society.
“A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep
To everything, turn, turn, turn
There is a season, turn, turn, turn
And a time to every purpose, under heaven.”
— “Turn! Turn! Turn!” by The Byrds
Steve will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, but his warmth, laughter, and legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
