Wally died January 11, 2019 after a long bout with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was born in 1928 in Baltimore, Maryland. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Marlene (nee Mueller) Bergstrom, his son Mark Bergstrom, (wife Mary), daughter Sally Stearns, son Christopher Bergstrom and 4 grandsons, Michael Stearns, Christopher Stearns, (wife Rachel), John Stearns and Nicholas Bergstrom as well as his great grandson, Isaac Stearns.
Wally was a graduate of Johns Hopkins University in 1949 with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He was a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society.
During the Korean War, he was stationed at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama along with other engineers and German rocket scientists including Wernher von Braun where they were working on developing the Redstone Rocket.
He retired from the United States Postal Service Headquarters, November 20, 1992.
Family will receive friends on Friday, Jan. 18th, from 2 to 4pm at Demaine Funeral Home, 10565 Main St., Fairfax, VA 22030. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Wally's name may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
