Born on September 28, 1949, in Arlington, Virginia, Bill was the son of Ernest Elmo Anderson and Betty Ellen (Hoover) Anderson. He spent his formative years in Northern Virginia, attending St. Charles Catholic School in Arlington before continuing his education at St. Leo's Catholic School, Westmore Elementary School, Sidney Lanier Intermediate School, and Fairfax High School in Fairfax.
After high school, Bill served his country in the United States Army, stationed both in the United States and Germany.
Following his service in the Army, Bill embarked on one of the most defining adventures of his life: backpacking across the United States for an entire year. Along the way, he took on various odd jobs, including a memorable stint as a ranch hand in Colorado. This journey became a wellspring of stories that he would share for decades to come.
Eventually settling back in Northern Virginia, Bill built a career as a skilled carpenter and painter. His craftsmanship left its mark on countless homes and buildings throughout the region, including George Washington's home at Mount Vernon where Bill worked for several years. Bill took pride in every project he touched and collected many stories along the way.
Bill’s love for the outdoors remained constant throughout his life. He found joy and peace in fishing trips by quiet streams, long hikes through wooded trails, camping under starlit skies, and backpacking through rugged terrain. These passions were more than hobbies—they were expressions of who he was: an outdoorsman with an adventurous soul.
Known for his friendly demeanor and gift for storytelling, Bill had an uncanny ability to captivate listeners with tales from his travels and experiences. His stories—often humorous, always heartfelt—were cherished by family and friends alike. He had a way of making people feel seen and heard through both conversation and companionship.
Bill deeply valued friendship and community. In later years, he found warmth and camaraderie among his caring group of friends at Little River Glen in Fairfax. These relationships brought him comfort and joy as he continued to share laughter and memories with those around him.
Bill is survived by his siblings: Patricia Bissi, Kevin Anderson, Brenda Godwin, Betty Hull, and Michael Anderson; as well as many nieces and nephews who will carry forward fond memories of their uncle’s vibrant personality and generous spirit.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Barbara Ellen Anderson; and brothers Charles Edward Anderson and Ernest Francis Anderson.
