

He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Sheila M. Dorgan. He was born in Acushnet and raised in New Bedford but settled in Mattapoisett. He was a proud graduate of St. Anthony’s High School and Providence College. He proudly served on the New Bedford Fire Department for 31 years. Afterward, he worked as the financial officer for the Congregation of Sacred Hearts and also served on the board of the New Bedford Credit Union.
The job he cherished the most was being a father to Meaghan Doucette and pépère to Mason and Malia Doucette. He devotedly drove north of Boston every week for 6 years to spend time with his beloved grandchildren.
He enjoyed traveling, watching the Patriots, walking the bike path in Mattapoisett, cooking for large and small crowds, dining out, and spending time with friends and family.
He was predeceased by his parents, Therese E. (Bertrand) Gauthier and Alfred L. Gauthier along with his younger sister, Elaine G. Motta and nephew Owen Motta.
He is survived by his daughter, Meaghan Doucette and son-in-law, Greg Doucette, grandchildren Mason and Malia Doucette, his sister Suzanne T. Gauthier, his sister Celeste C. Gauthier and her husband David Touchette, his foster sister, Irene Mescal, brother-in-law David Motta , niece Chelsea Fonseca and her husband Zach Fonseca, brother-in-law Robert Dorgan, niece Bridget Durant and her husband Cameron Durant, nephew Daniel Dorgan, nephew Kevin Dorgan, and niece Hillary Dorgan. He also leaves behind many cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.
Visiting hours, Tuesday, October 14, 2025 from 4-7 pm in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Fairlawn, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven. Funeral Mass, Wednesday, October 15, 2025 at 10 am in St. Mary’s Church, Main St., Fairhaven. Burial is private.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Eric Fernandes Memorial Scholarship Fund which provides scholarships for higher education for children of members of the New Bedford Fire Department.
