Algerina Medeiros, 99, died Aug. 26 at the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home. She is familiar to many for creating costumes for her late husband, Antone “Hawk” Medeiros, performing with him in shows, and keeping score on the sidelines of the teams he coached.
She was born April 2, 1924 in New Bedford, the daughter of Angela Correia and Manuel Ferreira, who moved to Acushnet four years later.
She graduated from Marie S. Howard School in Acushnet and attended New Bedford Vocational School, where later as an adult she took many courses including rug braiding, scrimshaw, and cake decorating.
She was a stitcher at various factories in New Bedford. Later, she worked in the cafeteria for Fairhaven schools until she retired as supervisor.
She says the best years of her life were the ones in which she was married. Together, she and her husband built their own home in North Fairhaven and grew a large garden. They also traveled together, including Hawaii, Las Vegas, California, Madeira, and the Azores.
Her hobbies included reading, feeding birds, and playing Bingo. She was a parishioner at St. Mary’s Church in North Fairhaven. She took part in St. Mary’s shows alongside her husband for the many years they ran.
Algerina leaves behind her children, Joan Livingston (Henry), Christine Medeiros, Susan “Kij” Greenwood (Gregg), and Antone Medeiros Jr. (Patricia); grandchildren, Paul, Sarah, Ezra, Emily, Nathaniel, Zachary, Julia, Katelyn, Laura, Samuel, and Madison; great-grandchildren Ariana, Akayliah, Gabriella, Corinna, Phoenix, and Felicity; sisters Ernestina Silvia and Carole Howard.
