Douglas C. Johnston, 74, of New Bedford, MA passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2025, surrounded by family. He was the beloved husband of Angela (Quintin) Johnston, with whom he shared 24 years of marriage. Before their marriage, they spent 10 years together, full of laughter and love, in New York City.
Born in Troy, New York, he was the son of the late Albert and Susan Josephine (Parslow) Johnston.
Douglas, a cherished individual whose life touched the hearts of many, earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and worked as a Textile Designer for many years in New York City. Doug served as a creative small business owner and director of art departments in various studios in Midtown Manhattan. He returned to his roots at RISD teaching Surface Design for 15 years, retiring in 2023. Doug influenced hundreds of national and international students while instructing on critical components of design and art combined to create relevant works of art.
In 2024, Doug opened an art studio in the Kilburn Mills of New Bedford, MA. Building a collection of sharp-edged geometric designs with a play on color, depth, and illusion. He continued painting through the spring, leaving his family with a collection of work that speaks to who Doug was as an artist.
He enjoyed designing, all genres of music, interesting and unique food, traveling worldwide, designer clothing and modern art. He lived a life of purpose and passion for his work and stayed true to what he loved. Doug’s greatest love was time spent with his wife, children, family, friends, and dogs.
Doug’s achievements were vast, but his humility was his hallmark. Doug could always be found on his covered porch, working on the New York Times daily crossword puzzle and waving to the neighbors passing by.
He was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and loyal friend. His presence was like a beacon, providing strength and comfort even in challenging times. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
In addition to his wife, Angela, he is survived by his loving children, Emma Johnston and her partner Halle Rogers of New Bedford, Quinn Johnston of Rhode Island, and Ian Johnston of New Bedford, and his brother, Gary Johnston of New York. Along with Gary’s three children Leah Mamone, Tarah Johnston, and Ben Johnston of NY. He was the father of the late Mack Johnston.
Doug's Celebration of Life will occur at DJ Studio located in The Kilburn Mills at 127 W Rodney French Blvd, New Bedford, MA on Saturday, July 26th from 4:00 PM - 9:00 PM.
