Edmund F. Coleman, 92, of Fairhaven, passed away on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at home following a long illness. He was the husband of Dorothea (Mc Partlan) Coleman with whom he shared 70 years of marriage.
Born in Boston, a son of the late Frank J. and Margaret A. (Ballem) Coleman, he had lived in Dorchester for nearly 60 years before moving to Fairhaven 30 years ago.
Mr. Coleman was a graduate of Boston English High School and served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre of Operations.
Ed worked at Boston Naval Shipyard for 33 years before that facility was shut down in June 1973.
He then went to work at the New University of Massachusetts at Colombia Point.
Following 2 years at U-Mass in Boston, he transferred to SMU in Dartmouth and left in early 1983.
Ed was an avid reader and also enjoyed golfing. He was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Fairhaven.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his children, Donna Lopes of Stuart, FL, Nancy Rodriques of Jensen Beach, FL, Richard Coleman of Fairhaven; his siblings, Bernard Coleman of Braintree, Ann Hayward of Boston, Robert Coleman of Woburn, Raymond Coleman of Harwich Port, Grace Finell of Simpsonville, S.C. and Mary Lou Cooney of Greenville, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild. He was the father of the late Edmund Coleman, Jr. and Paul Coleman and brother of the late Francis Coleman and Carolyn Holihan.
His visitation will be held on Monday, April 16, 2012 from 4-8pm in the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Fairlawn, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven. A memorial mass will be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at 10am in St. Joseph’s Church, 74 Spring St., Fairhaven.
