

Gertrude L. (Chambers) Gomes, 96, passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at the Tremont Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center in Wareham following a period of declining health. She was the devoted wife of the late William D. Gomes, to whom she had been married 63 years.
Born in Albany, New York, the birth child of Clifton and Bessie (Woodbury) Chambers, she was adopted and raised by her grandparents George and Jesse (Shaw) Chambers of New Bedford. She was a graduate of New Bedford High School and worked as a gas mask inspector at the Acushnet Company. Gertrude moved to Fairhaven in 1949 after her marriage to William.
Mrs. Gomes was a “child of the American Revolution”, a member, Past Commander and Adjutant of the D.A.V. Auxiliary CE Burt Chapter 7 in New Bedford, the Fairhaven Seniors, the Acushnet Jolly Seniors and a member of the Wilbur’s Point Association in Fairhaven. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, gardening and loved animals all of kinds. Gert also frequented Oak Bluffs in her younger years.
Survivors include her loving daughter, Sherry L. Gomes of Plymouth; her son, William C. Gomes of Hollywood, FL; her brother, Gerald Chambers of Boston; and her favorite nephew, Daniel Gomes and his wife Claudia of Fairhaven.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 4, 2013 from 10-11:30am followed by a funeral service at 11:30am in the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Fairlawn, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Flowers welcomed or donations may be made to the M.S.P.C.A., 350 South Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02130. The family would like to recognize the Tremont Nursing Staff for their devotion and loving care of “Gerty”.
