FAIRHAVEN-Gladys Mae Demanche, 86, passed away peacefully on September 18th, 2020. Born in New Bedford on November 16th, 1933 to Frances (Pilkington) and Harold Haslam. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Joseph “Maury” Demanche.

She graduated from Normandin Middle School and then attended New Bedford Vocational High School. After working for several years at McGee’s Photography store in New Bedford, she met and married Maury, the love of her life in 1958. Her next job was the one she cherished most of all, that of mother and homemaker.

Gladys greatest pleasure was always time spent with family. If you were a friend of her children or grandchildren that simply meant that you also were family. She cherished planning and preparing feasts, ranging from spaghetti dinners to stacks of meat pies and her famous French dressing. Gladys was also a creative crafter, a master with a glue gun, flower design and bows. Her home was decorated with wreaths, snowmen and other holiday items that she would observe in a magazine then recreated herself.

Gladys is preceded in death by her brother Bert and his wife Janet Haslam . She leaves behind her brother and sister in law Robert and Jay Demanche as well as her sister in law Lillian Demanche. Her son, Paul “Spanky” Demanche, his wife Cathy. Her daughter Kathy and her husband Bill Silver. Her grandchildren Kerri and her husband Tony Rodrigues, Gregory Silver, Riley and Haley Demanche and her great-granddaughter Audrey Maura Rodrigues.

After Maury passed in 2017, she could often be found in any of several Fairhaven eateries with either her daughter or her sidekick, Greg. The two shared a bond that was truly special.

Gladys family would like to express our deep appreciation to all the various health care providers she encountered over the last several years. We are grateful for all your efforts.

Visitation will take place with masks and social distancing on Wednesday, September 23rd from 5-8 pm at Fairlawn Mortuary, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven,MA. Her Funeral Mass will take place Thursday, September 24th 10 am at St Mary’s Church, 440 Main St., Fairhaven, MA followed by her interment at Riverside Cemetery in Fairhaven.

Paul and Kathy,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you both and your families. As we get older, we get so busy with our own lives and families we tend to forget a bit about our elder relatives and family. As children, we did see a lot of your parents and the Haslam family during the holidays and those times are now special memories.
We did run into your mom at Mike's Restaurant with Kathy and Greg last year. It was very nice to see her.

It was a pleasure being your Mom/ Grandmother’s neighbor when we lived on Hawthorne St. I have such fond memories of Mr and Mrs Demanche. They were very kind to my children, Kristen, Tommy ,and Erin Rego. She would always welcome them over to visit. I also have had the honor of her making wooden replicants of my children as Christmas Carolers, even giving my Tommy ; little wire rimmed glasses. Because of you, I met Kerri and Greg who were great Babysitters. Thank you for allowing me to share this memory. I am thinking of you all at this difficult time. Seek Comfort in knowing that she is home in heaven with your Dad/Grandfather . They will be watching over you..until you meet again. With Sympathy , Tricia Saunders
