James “Jimmy” Alves, age 70, of Mattapoisett, passed away Saturday, September 27, 2025, in St. Luke’s Hospital. He passed peacefully in the arms of his family after a long, hard-fought battle of his chronic illness. He was the Fiancée of Carole Messier, with whom he shared 26 years together.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late John Alves Jr. and the late Sarah (Pacheco) Alves, he was a graduate of Fairhaven High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from Bentley College.
Jimmy was a CPA for 30 years with Shabshelowitz before moving on to form his own business, James Alves CPA, for the past 17 years. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, camping, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved attending all of his grandchildren’s sporting events and was a very proud Grandpa. He also enjoyed his Wednesday Golf League, WickedStix, and looked forward to poker nights with the guys following a round of golf. Jimmy was a long-time member at The Reservation Golf Club, where he enjoyed golfing with friends and family. During this time, he developed many great friendships, especially with his late friend Bob “Colonel” McGuire, where we can only imagine their reunion and having their best round of golf with some great jokes and laughs.
He is survived by his three children, Rachel Alves of Mattapoisett, James Alves II of Mattapoisett, and Michael Alves of Fairhaven; three grandchildren, Wayne Andrews, Dylan Andrews, and Blake Messier, Carole’s children, Zachary and Cory Messier; a brother John “Jack” Alves III of Fairhaven; and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Steven and David Alves.
His Visitation will be held on Friday, October 3, 2025, from 3 to 7pm in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Fairlawn, 180 Washington Street, Fairhaven, followed by his Funeral Service at 7pm in the funeral home. The family would like to invite you to a celebration of life on Sunday, October 5,2025 at 2pm at The Reservation Golf Club located at 10 Reservation Road, Mattapoisett.
