The world has lost a true man of character who mentored and befriended all those he came in contact with over the years. His calm demeanor and the chomping of his gum while in the middle of chaotic disturbance put all his "kids" at ease when they all had just over a year on the job. His guidance, friendship, and patience over the years with every opportunity presented gained him the respect of his staff and inmates. He always spoke of his beloved Doris as if they had just fell in love the day before. His shared life experiences made us all better than we actually were. His innate ability to bring calm to any situation taught us all valuable life lessons. From the onset of my career he engrained in us to treat people with respect. Just because they are within our walls doesn't mean they aren't people it just means they made a poor decision and got caught. They are someone to someone! Captain John Cosmo you will forever be more than a someone to all who knew the "Captain!" Find peace and thank you for being the man you were...... forever grateful for our friendship.

Johnny and Doris were frequent visitors to our home on Ash Street when I was a teenager, and we always considered them family. His sister, Laura was married to my brother, Alden.

My deepest condolences to Doris, Laura, and all of the Cosmo family.

Captain Cosmo was my Captain at the Wyatt Detention Facility for several years mostly on the weekends. Captain Cosmo was an amazing man I learned everything I needed to survive in the jungle and Captain Cosmo had the most amazing stories from his long distinguished career in corrections. We had our own situations we came across at Wyatt and Captain Cosmo always came up with the solution to every time. I remember one particular incident on a Saturday a detainee in A dorm climbed the basketball hoop 10ft in the air and refused to come down. Captain Cosmo went out to the rec-yard an ordered the detainee to get down he refused and Captain Cosmo calmly gave me and a fellow officer orders to go down to the laundry department and get a couple of mattresses then explained we would get a bed sheet make a rope out of it put the mattresses under the basketball hoop and we pull him down. This was awesome we went into the rec-yard put the mattresses under the hoop and had our rope made from the bed sheet. The detainee now in a panic ask Captain Cosmo what the hell was going to happen he told the detainee you don't come from the hoop we are pulling you down well I never saw someone climb down from a 10ft basketball hoop that fast. Captain Cosmo laughing as we exited said I knew he would climb down on his own but that Captain Cosmo always out smarting the bad guys. Rest in Peace Captain Cosmo you were truly a great man and I will always remember you and the stories and different situations we encountered. Heaven just gained a great man and even greater story teller.
